Detector Case of the Quarter

Deputy Adam Clausen & K-9 Irk
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office
Crime Suppression Team K-9

On 11-02-07 at 2127 hrs Deputy Clausen conducted a traffic stop on a black suv on SR 40 in Pierson, Fl for speeding. Upon contact with the driver he was very nervous and the two passengers would not make any eye contact.  The driver advised he had no ID and the passengers provided their ID’s. Due to the driver being so nervous and the conflicting stories from the passengers, Deputy Clausen decided to deploy K-9 Irk for a narcotics sniff on the vehicle. K-9 Irk alerted by sitting at the driver’s side door indicating the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle found a cooler in the back seat with 9 kilos of cocaine inside. Under the passenger seat was a loaded 9 mm handgun. All three were arrested and charged with armed trafficking in cocaine.
